Detailed Itinerary for 5 Days Uganda Gorillas and Rwanda Dian Fossey Hike Safari
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable national park
You will be picked from your hotel in Kigali or the airport on arrival by our driver/guide and proceed northwards to cross over to Uganda heading to Bwindi impenetrable national park, a home to remaining Mountain Gorillas. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi
Have breakfast and transfer you to park offices for briefing about Mountain Gorilla trekking by a local guide. The time taken is usually between 2-8 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas. Meeting the gorillas unexpectedly is one of the most captivating lifetime experiences. You will have a chance to observe and take pictures at very close range. You will observe adults feeding and groaning among themselves. After an hour with the long-awaited gorillas, your guide and rangers will lead you back to the starting point where your driver will readily be waiting to transfer to lodge in Kisoro. Have dinner and spend an overnight stay.
Day 3: Golden Monkeys tracking – Mgahinga national park – Ruhengeri in Rwanda
After early morning breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for briefing from the park warden about the endangered golden monkeys. After connect to the tracking starting point and enter the forest to search for the golden monkey. This activity can take about 1-5 hours and is done at closer view of the other primates in the park like the red tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys among other. After viewing the golden monkeys for an hour while taking pictures and studying their behaviors, return to the base and meet your drive to have your lunch.
Then connect for 2-3 hours’ drive to Ruhengeri in Rwanda. Cross via Cyanika border to connect to your lodge. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Dian Fossey hike and return to Kigali
After early morning breakfast, the driver will transfer you to the park headquarters where you will connect to the trial head (30 minutes’ drive). You will walk to the park boundary to connect to Karisoke research camp where Dian Fossey lived, killed and buried. Dian was an American primatologist who dedicated her entire life conserving the lives of the mountain gorillas in Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains until she was killed. Hiking to Dian Fossey graveyard is one and a half hike with great views of forest fogs, forest elephants and different species of birds and primates. On arriving at the camp, you will see a house where she was murdered and buried just next to her favorite gorilla (digit) along with other mountain gorillas killed by poachers.
Descend from the hike and meet your driver who will be waiting to drive you back to Kigali city, you will do a city tour if tour allows before you connect to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Kigali City tour and departure
After breakfast, meet up with your driver for a city tour around Kigali, visit the Kigali genocide memorial, the Kimironko market and other remarkable places as you will be advised by your driver. Have lunch at the Des Milles Collines hotel. Depending on departure time, be dropped off at the hotel for your check-in.
