Detailed Itinerary for 5 Days Congo Lowland Gorillas and Mount Kahuzi Hike.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali.
When you arrive at the airport, you will be greeted by our company’s driver guide, who will transport you to your hotel of residence in Kigali for supper and an overnight stay. While in Kigali, you will take a tour of Kigali city where you can visit the national museum, genocide museum, Caplaki craft village, and Umusambi Crane Village among others. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.
Day 2: Transfer from Kigali to Bukavu in Congo
After an early breakfast, you will depart for Kahuzi Biega national park, passing through south eastern Rwanda and stopping at any tourist destination along the way. You will then proceed to Butare, Rwanda’s second largest town, where you will stop for lunch before crossing the Cyangugu border and continuing to Bukavu town, where you will stay at your accommodation lodge. Dinner and overnight at Coco Lodge Bukavu/ Hotel Panorama.
Day 3: Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking and visit Lwiro Sanctuary
After an early morning breakfast at your hotel, you will be dropped off to the park headquarters at 7 a.m., where you will be divided into groups of 8 people based on physical condition and assigned a ranger guide who will accompany you along the hiking paths. Trekking can take 1-4 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family since they move from one site to another in quest of food. You will be able to spend one hour with the lowland gorillas, photographing and filming the juvenile lowland gorillas feeding and playing with the older silverback gorillas, among other activities in the bush. After that, you’ll return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, you can proceed for an afternoon visit to Lwiro Sanctuary where you will get a chance to see chimpanzees and other primates that have been rescued from poachers. Later drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Hike Mount Kahuzi
Prepare your gear for a hike up Mount Kahuzi, which is dominated by montane rainforests on the slopes. As you hike the mountain, you will have the opportunity to encounter the unique wildlife in Kahuzi Biega national park such as forest mountains, forest giraffes, antelopes, primates such as golden monkeys, lowland gorillas, black and white monkeys, and others. The hike takes roughly four hours rising and three hours descending and it takes you through bamboo woods as well as alpine flora. You then return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali.
After breakfast at the lodge, transfer back to Kigali; with drop off at Kigali International Airport or at your hotel, bringing your 5 day Lowland Gorillas and Mount Kahuzi Hike Safari to a close.
