Detailed Itinerary for 6 Days Kahuzi Biega Lowland Gorillas and Nyungwe Safari
Day 1: Pickup in Kigali and Transfer to Bukavu- DR Congo
In the morning, you will be picked by the driver from your hotel in Kigali and drive southwards to Cyangugu boarder on the way to Bukavu in DR Congo. You will have a stopover in Butare, where you will visit the national museum of Rwanda, the king’s palace in Nyanza, and the Rwanda genocide memorial site. After lunch, continue on a scenic journey to Bukavu with wonderful views of the hills in Rwanda through the tropical forest of Nyungwe National park and a clear view of Lake Kivu. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Bukavu.
Day 2: Lowland Gorilla tracking tour in Kahuzi Biega – DR Congo
In the morning, you will head for the memorable adventure of tracking the lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National park. Tacking lowland Gorillas is very amazing, lowland Gorillas differ from the mountain gorillas, the lowland gorillas are bigger in size, usually takes 1-4 hours tracking the lowland Gorillas. The lowland Gorillas stay in bigger families as compared to mountain gorillas; you will not regret the safari effort once you meet the amazing Gorillas! Later in the afternoon drive back to your hotel. Dinner and overnight at the park bandas.
Day 3: Hike Mount Kahuzi
After having your breakfast, you will meet up with your driver guide and drive to the park’s briefing point. Mount Kahuzi is the highest peak in the park, at 3,308m. The climb takes approximately 4 hours through bamboo forest and sub alpine vegetation, and 3 hours to descend. The summit provides spectacular views of Lake Kivu and the city of Bukavu. Ensure to carry packed lunch from your lodge.
After your hike, you will have your packed lunch and proceed with your descend down the mountain. You will find your driver guide waiting for you at base and proceed to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay at your hotel in Bukavu.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park and Canopy Walk
Have early morning breakfast and connect back to Bukavu crossing into Rwanda via Cyangugu proceed to Nyungwe National Park where you will embark on a 2-hour hike along the Canopy walkway- a swing bridge 50 meters in length that is suspended from large trees. You will be able to see the amazing rainforest with a bird’s eye view, spotting wildlife moving about below you there after connect to your accommodation to spend the evening at leisure. Dinner and overnight at your lodge/hotel.
Day 5: Chimpanzee Trek
Enjoy breakfast and go for briefing about the endangered chimpanzees before entering the forest in search of the active and playful fellows in Nyungwe forest. The Chimpanzees are much easier to spot as they jump from one tree to another, chattering and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking usually takes about 3 hours. On finding them, spend an hour while taking pictures and videos. You will then have lunch and return to your hotel to freshen up. Spend the rest of your evening at leisure.

Day 6: Colobus Monkey Trek and Transfer Back to Kigali
On the last day of your 6 Days Kahuzi Biega Lowland Gorillas and Nyungwe Safari, you will start your day with an early breakfast then drive to the park’s briefing point. After you have been briefed, you will be placed in a tracking group and head into the forest in search for black and white colobus monkeys. Trekking can take between 3-4 hours or more depending on their location. Once you have located a group, you will be given an hour to spend with them; so, make sure that your camera is ready.
After you have had you packed lunch, meet up with your driver guide at base and embark on a 6 hours’ drive back to Kigali city where you will be dropped off at a hotel of your choice or Kigali international airport.
