Detailed Itinerary for 6 Days Akagera and Volcanoes Park Safari.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali.
Find our company representative waiting for you upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport in the evening. After a brief meet and greet session with your driver guide, you will be driven to your hotel in Kigali city where you will check-in and refresh yourself.
Dinner and overnight stay at your preferred hotel.
Day 2: Transfer to Akagera National Park-Game Drive and Evening Boat Cruise
On the second day of your 6 Days Akagera and Volcanoes Park Safari, you will have you breakfast early in the morning and then embark on about a 2-and-a-half-hour drive to Akagera national park. Upon your arrival in the park, you will embark on a game drive in the southern part of the park where you can look out for wildlife such as lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, giraffe and zebras to mention but a few. You will then proceed to your lodge for lunch and relax for a while.
Later in the evening, you will head out to the park for a sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema where you will view wildlife busking or roaming at the river banks. You will also get to see a number of bird species during your boat cruise including the African finfoot, Pelicans, Cormorants, and the Kingfisher to mention but a few.
Later retire back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Northern Circuit Game Drive and Transfer to Ruhengeri.
On your third day of your 6 Days Akagera and Volcanoes Park Safari, after you have had breakfast at your lodge, you will embark on a morning game drive in the northern part of the park where you will see a large number of wildlife animals roaming the savannah plains; look out for any wildlife that you might have missed sighting during your previous game drive in the park.
After your game drive, you will have lunch enroute to your hotel/lodge nearer to Volcanoes National Park the home of these endangered species to rest and prepare for the trek the next morning. This journey will be approximately 2 and a half hours from Kigali to Ruhengeri. Dinner and Overnight at stay at your designated lodge.
Day 4: Gorilla Trek in Volcanoes National Park & Ibyi’wacu Village Tour.
As early at 6am, you will be expected to be up for breakfast and ready to set off for the trek. Our guide will meet you after having your breakfast and your lunches packed and he will take you to Kinigi Headquarters where you are expected to be given a brief before starting the gorilla trek. This brief is done at 7am. You are given guidelines during this brief before you are allowed to start the trek. This gorilla trek can take to about 2 hours to half a day as it’s unpredictable. When you finally find the gorillas, you will have to maintain a 6 meters’ distance and you are allowed one hour to admire and take photos of the gorillas.
After the trek, you will have lunch and taken back to your hotel as the night before to relax and reminisce on the experience. Later in the afternoon, you will visit the Ibyi’wacu Cultural Visit where you will learn more about the Rwandan culture, visit the former’s king’s palace and even dress in traditional Rwandan attire. Dinner and overnight will be at the same hotel as the night before.
Day 5: Golden Monkey Trek & Transfer to Lake Kivu- Sunset Boat Cruise.
On the fifth day of your 6 Days Akagera and Volcanoes Park Safari, you will have breakfast early in the morning and head to the park’s briefing point for your 7am morning brief. After your briefing, you will be placed in tracking groups and then head into the forest in search for a group of golden monkeys. Once you have located a group, you will be given an hour to spend with the primates before heading back to base where you will find your driver guide waiting for you.
Have lunch and later proceed with you 1-hour drive to Lake Kivu in Gisenyi arriving in time to check-in at the hotel. Later in the evening, you will head out for a sunset boat cruise on Lake Kivu with a sundowner. Enjoy sight-seeing on the lake as you view some of the islands on the lake and a variety of bird species including Striated Heron, Black-headed Heron, Hadada and Sacred Ibis, Little bee-eater, African Pied Wagtail, Scarlet-chested, Red-chested and Variable Sunbird, Black-headed Weaver, Spectacled Weaver, Holub’s Golden Weaver, Red-billed Fire finch, Common Waxbill, and the Yellow-bellied Waxbill among others.
Dinner and overnight stay at your designated lodge/hotel.
Day 6: Transfer Back to Kigali (About 3-4 Hours’ Drive)
After having breakfast at your hotel, proceed with your drive back to Kigali where your driver guide will drop you off at a hotel of your choice or Kigali international airport for your onward flight back home.
