A Travelers’ Guide to Hiking Tshibati Waterfalls : The Tsahibati waterfall is found in Kahuzi Biega National Park. Though the park is most known for its Grauer’s gorillas, the Kahuzi Biega National Park has much more to offer visitors than just gorilla trekking. Our network of paths allows visitors to explore the park’s many landscapes, which include tropical forests, bamboo forests, wetlands, and waterfalls, as well as the possibility of seeing birds, monkeys, and numerous other animal and plant species. Climbing our two highest peaks, Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Biega (2,704 m), provides spectacular views of the park, Lake Kivu, the mountain range, and even Goma.

The routes are currently extremely primitive, and are mostly used by our guards to patrol the jungle and follow the gorillas. However, work is currently ongoing to create pathways with health and safety in mind, allowing visitors of all ages and fitness levels to enjoy the park.

The Mont Bugulumiza Trail, located near the Tshivanga Visitor Centre and covering terrain frequently occupied by the Chimanuka gorilla family, the Marais Musisi Trail, which takes in bamboo forests and the swamp and offers a stunning view of the Marais Musisi, where one of our guides recently spotted a troupe of elephants.

You might also want to consider the Tshibati Waterfalls Trail, which offers three magnificent waterfalls, a chance for a dip in a plunge. The park has also opened the Mont Kahuzi Trail late last year, with camping options near the peak.

Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking

The only national park in Congo where tourists may follow the infamous eastern lowland gorillas in their native environment is Kahuzi-Biega. It also boasts the largest population of eastern lowland gorillas, with over 250 individuals. The species, also known as Grauer’s gorilla, is the biggest of four gorilla subspecies, which comprise Mountain gorillas, Western lowland gorillas, Eastern lowland gorillas, and cross river gorillas.

A gorilla permits for eastern lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega national park costs USD 400 per person. Trekking normally starts at 7 a.m. with a briefing. Trekkers are then divided into groups of no more than eight people.

Trekking eastern lowland gorillas in the park might take 4 to 6 hours or more, depending on the gorillas’ position in the forest. Eastern lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega can take even longer hours, especially if the gorillas have ventured deep into the forest in search of food, making tracking difficult for tourists, especially if they are not in peak physical and mental condition.

Boat Cruise excursions on Lake Kivu.

How to Get to Kahuzi Biega.

The majority of journeys to Kahuzi-Biega National Park begin in Rwanda, with pick-ups in Kigali or Gisenyi. Other travellers may decide to fly into Goma International Airport, where our company guide will be waiting for you. The Rusizi I route takes around 6-7 hours to get from Kigali City to Kamembe in Cyangugu town. Travelers will need to drive for around 112 hours to reach the national park after crossing the borders at Goma and Bukavu.

Alternatively, travellers can take a flight from Kigali Airport to Goma Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is an excellent way of transportation to the DRC. Travelers may reach the national park by driving 230 kilometres from Goma.
