Kundelungu national park is one of the forgotten national parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The national park is located in Haut-Katanga Province in the South Western part of Congo.
The national park was first established in 1970 and covers 7,600 square kilometers. The main attraction in the national park is the Lofoi Falls which is basically a 340 metres high waterfall making it one of the largest waterfalls in Central Africa.
Common fauna found in the national park include antelopes, jackals, porcupines, warthogs, snakes, monkeys, buffalos and hippos. The park is also home to a variety of bird species including egrets, pelicans, and marabous among others.
The national park in Congo is listed as a category II park under the IUCN. The park first started out as a hunting ground and was later declared a protected area in order to conserve and protect the wildlife in the park.
The national park is adjacent to Upemba National Park located in Katanga province 180 kilometres north east of Lubumbashi on a plateau from which the park’s name was derived.

Birding
Birding in Kundelungu park is among one of the best activities to do during your visit to the park. Among some of the bird species sighted in the national park include; cranes, egrets, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Pale-billed Hornbill, Sharp-tailed Starling, Bannerman’s Sunbird, Black-eared Seedeater, marabous and pelicans to mention but a few.

Accommodation facilities inside Kundelungu park do not have electricity; therefore visitors planning to spend a night inside the park are advised to pack carry torches. Alternatively, visitors can also stay in hotels outside the park include Mokorro hotel and Icon hotel among others.
Best Time to visit Kundelungu National Park.
The national park in Congo can be visited anytime of the year; although the best time to visit the park is between June to August and also December to February. Wildlife in the national park can easily be spotted easily during the dry season when the vegetation in the park is short.
How to get to Kundelungu National Park.
The national park can be easily accessed by road. Visitors can travel to the park from Lubumbashi which is a 2 hour’s drive. Visitors are always advised to use 4WD vehicles when visiting the park.
