Nyungwe forest national park is one of the tropical national parks in Rwanda and it is located in the Southwestern part of the country in Rusizi district/province. The national park is Rwanda’s number one destination for chimpanzee trekking safaris with over 1000 individuals. The park spans over a radius of 1,019 km² and is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa.
Nyungwe forest national park in Rwanda is well known for its biodiversity, supporting about 1,068 recorded plant species, 322 species of birds, 75 known mammal species and 13 different primate species including the Black and White colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys to mention but a few.
The Canopy walk in Nyungwe national park is even more fun when combined with a chimpanzee trekking in Cyamudongo forest. The canopy walk is conducted on a suspension bridge 70 meters above the ground floor and is 160 meters long.
A walk on this bridge will give you spectacular views of the beautiful Nyungwe forest canopy and various bird species. Keen viewers will be able to see some monkeys playing within the tall trees in the forest.

It takes approximately two hours to complete a round trip and the park offers visitors guided tours to the Canopy walkway twice a day; every morning starting at 8am and every afternoon at 3pm.

The Canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park can be done at any time of the year. However, the best time to do the canopy walk in the park is during the dry months when hiking trails in the park are passable.
A guided tour to the Canopy walkway costs USD 60 per person for Foreign Non-Residents and USD 50 per person for Foreign Residents.
What to carry with you for the Canopy walk in Nyungwe National Park.
Given the fact that the national park is located within a tropical rainforest, it is important that you pack a light raincoat or jacket because it can rain at any given time while you are in the forest. Also pack the following essential items; long sleeved trousers and shirts, hiking boots, water bottle, walking stick, a hat/ cap, a camera and a pair of binoculars.
