Detailed Itinerary for 6 Days Gorilla Safari in Rwanda
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali.
Find our company representative waiting for you upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport in the evening. After a brief meet and greet session with your driver guide, you will be driven to your hotel in Kigali city where you will check-in and refresh yourself.
Dinner and overnight stay at your preferred hotel.
Day 2: Hotel Pickup and City Tour
Wake up in the morning and have your breakfast by 8:30am. You will find our driver guide waiting for you at the hotel lobby at 9am and head out for a Kigali City tour where you will visit places like the Genocide Memorial Centre, Kandt Museum, Caplaki craft village and Nyamirambo women’s Centre.
Dinner and overnight stay at your preferred hotel.
Day 3: Pick Up and Transfer to Ruhengeri.
On your second day with us according to this itinerary you will be met by our representative who will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali. You will be taken for a city tour, visiting the Rwanda genocide memorial grounds, some craft shops and your driver guide will give you some information on the culture and history of Rwanda. You will also have lunch depending on your time of arrival. After enjoying Kigali, you will then embark on a journey to your hotel nearer to Volcanoes National park the home of these endangered species to rest and prepare for the trek the next morning. This journey will be approximately 2 and a half hours from Kigali to Ruhengeri. Dinner and Overnight at stay at your designated lodge.
Day 4: Gorilla Trek in Volcanoes National Park & Ibyi’wacu Village Tour.
As early at 6am, you will be expected to be up for breakfast and ready to set off for the trek. Our guide will meet you after having your breakfast and your lunches packed and he will take you to Kinigi Headquarters where you are expected to be given a brief before starting the gorilla trek. This brief is done at 7am. You are given guidelines during this brief before you are allowed to start the trek. This gorilla trek can take to about 2 hours to half a day as it’s unpredictable. When you finally find the gorillas, you will have to maintain a 6 meters’ distance and you are allowed one hour to admire and take photos of the gorillas.
After the trek, you will have lunch and taken back to your hotel as the night before to relax and reminisce on the experience. Later in the afternoon, you will visit the Ibyi’wacu Cultural Visit where you will learn more about the Rwandan culture, visit the former’s king’s palace and even dress in traditional Rwandan attire. Dinner and overnight will be at the same hotel as the night before.
Day 5: Visit Dian Fossey Campus & Transfer to Lake Kivu- Sunset Boat Cruise.
You will enjoy breakfast and set out for a visit to the Elle DeGeneres Campus of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund which is located in Kinigi. Take a tour of the facility which includes classrooms, exhibit hall, research laboratories. You will get to learn more about Dian Fossey’s research work and how it has greatly contributed to the conservation of the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Later proceed with you 1-hour drive to Lake Kivu in Gisenyi arriving in time to check-in at the hotel and have lunch.
Later in the evening, you will head out for a sunset boat cruise on Lake Kivu with a sundowner. Enjoy sight-seeing on the lake as you view some of the islands on the lake and a variety of bird species including Striated Heron, Black-headed Heron, Hadada and Sacred Ibis, Little bee-eater, African Pied Wagtail, Scarlet-chested, Red-chested and Variable Sunbird, Black-headed Weaver, Spectacled Weaver, Holub’s Golden Weaver, Red-billed Fire finch, Common Waxbill, and the Yellow-bellied Waxbill among others.
Dinner and overnight stay at your designated lodge/hotel.
Day 6: Transfer Back to Kigali (About 3-4 Hours’ Drive)
After having breakfast at your hotel, proceed with your drive back to Kigali where your driver guide will drop you off at a hotel of your choice or Kigali international airport for your onward flight back home.
