Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

On Day 2 of your 4 days Akagera and Nyungwe Safari, wake up in the morning for an early game drive safari in the park. This early morning game drive gives you an opportunity to view wildlife when at its most active. This is the perfect opportunity to look out for predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas as they return from night hunts. During your game drive, you will also get a chance to view other wildlife such as impala, topi, elephants, elands, zebras, rhinos, and many more.

Later, return to your lodge for breakfast before checking out and driving to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The drive to the park is long but offers you stunning views of the countryside, well-terraced hills, and tea plantations.

You will have a stopover for lunch en route to the park. Stopover in Huye or a local craft shop to grab a few refreshments, ease yourself, and stretch. Upon your arrival in Nyungwe in the evening, check into your hotel and relax. Dinner will be served at your hotel.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk Experience- Optional Zipline Experience

On Day 3 of your 4 days Akagera and Nyungwe Safari, wake up in the morning and have an early breakfast meal before proceeding to the park’s briefing point. You will be briefed by the park warden and then placed in a group with fellow trekkers (maximum of eight members per chimpanzee group). You will be assigned a guide and ranger before heading into the forest in search of chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest takes about 3-5 hours or more, depending on the location of the chimpanzees. Once you have located the chimpanzees, you will spend an hour observing them in their natural habitat as they swing through the trees, groom each other, and interact socially with one another. During your trek, you may also spot other primates in the forest such as colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, and even numerous species of birds and butterflies.

After having your lunch, proceed to the canopy walk where you will enjoy a 2-hour hike to and from the famed canopy walkway bridge in Nyungwe forest. This canopy walkway bridge is suspended high above the forest floor, and the bridge itself stretches through treetops, offering stunning views of the rainforest canopy, deep valleys, and distant mountains.

Later, return to your lodge or hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Guided Nature Walk in Nyungwe Forest and Transfer Back to Kigali

On the last day of your safari, take a guided nature walk or an optional birding trip through Nyungwe Forest. The park is a birder’s haven, with hundreds of bird species, many of which are unique to the Albertine Rift region. Depending on the trail you will be hiking, you will have a chance to see beautiful waterfalls, which will mark the highlight of your hiking experience in the forest.
